John Rubinstein created the title role in the Broadway musical Pippin, directed by Bob Fosse, and won the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for his performance in Children of a Lesser God.
Other Broadway appearances include Ragtime, M. Butterfly, Fools, Hurlyburly, Love Letters and The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. He played the Wizard for 18 months in the Los Angeles production of Wicked. He has appeared in 25 feature films, including 21 Grams, and in two TV series, Crazy Like a Fox and Family, for which he received an Emmy nomination. For the stage, he has directed Nightingale, The Old Boy, The Rover, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Company, A Little Night Music, Into the Woods, On The Town, City of Angels and Counsellor-at-Law, for which he received Ovation and Drama League awards for acting and co-directing.
Rubinstein composed the scores for the films Jeremiah Johnson, The Candidate and over 50 TV programs. He currently teaches musical theater and film acting at USC. His most rewarding experience has been participating in the lives of his five children: Jessica, Michael, Peter, Jacob and Max.
