David Shostac
principal flute
“Extraordinary, dazzling, world class,” and “a musician of the highest order” are words critics have used to describe David Shostac’s artistry. An alumnus of the Juilliard School and Tanglewood and recipient of two Rockefeller performance grants, he has served as principal flutist of the St. Louis, Milwaukee and New Orleans symphony orchestras, in addition to his long tenure with LACO. Shostac has performed as a solo and orchestral player at the Hollywood Bowl and has taken part in the Ojai, Mostly Mozart, Aspen, and Oregon Bach festivals, also appearing with the American Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2005, Shostac performed CPE Bach’s Concerto in D minor for Flute and Strings with LACO and in 2004 was featured in the West Coast premiere of Paul Schoenfield’s Klezmer Rondos with the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony.
He has worked with prominent conductors Eugene Ormandy, Zubin Mehta, Leopold Stokowski, Seiji Ozawa, Karl Richter, Helmuth Rilling, and Christopher Hogwood, among others. Recent solo recordings include Chamber Music Classics for Flute, featuring the 2002 Grammy-winning Angeles String Quartet and Pacific Trio. His discography also includes J.S. Bach: The Six Flute Sonatas, Masterpieces from the French Repertoire, The Romantic Flute (volumes one and two), Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos; and a historic recording of Terry Riley’s In C. The 2003 release by the Bel Arts Trio, of which Shostac is a member, features the music of Gershwin, Bizet, Faure, Rimsky-Korsakov, and others. Other recording projects include chamber music of the late Romantic Austrian-Jewish composer Richard Stohr, as well as some jazz-oriented music. Shostac has plans to record his Carmen Fantasy-Suite based on the Carmen Fantasie Brillante by Francois Borne.
Shostac is active in the motion picture recording industry and can be heard on hundreds of motion picture soundtracks. His expanding list of credits includes X-Men: The Last Stand, Monster House, Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo Drift, The Devil Wears Prada, All the King’s Men, and The Good Shepherd.
Shostac has taught at USC, UCLA, California Institute of the Arts and the Aspen Music School. He is a faculty member of California State University at Northridge and the Henry Mancini Institute. In 2004, he joined the international summer chamber music faculty of the Idyllwild Arts Academy.
