David Washburn
principal trumpet
David Washburn is the principal trumpet of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. A much sought-after musician in Los Angeles, he also holds the principal position with the Pasadena Pops Orchestra and is associate principal trumpet of the LA Opera Orchestra. He has served as principal trumpet and soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
Active in the recording studios, David has numerous motion picture soundtracks to his credit. He played principal trumpet for All the King’s Men, The Legend of Zorro, Troy, The Missing, Radio, Jungle Book II, Holes, A Beautiful Mind, Windtalkers, The Grinch, The Perfect Storm, Titanic and Deep Impact. You can also hear David on the soundtrack for the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric.
Currently, David is a member of the faculty at Chapman University, Biola University, University of California Irvine and California State University Long Beach. He has held teaching positions at Cal State University Northridge, Redlands University, Idyllwild School of the Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.
He received his Masters of Music, with distinction, from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and his Bachelor of Music from the Thornton Music School at University of Southern California. His trumpet instructors have included Rob Roy McGregor, Robert Nagel, John Clyman and Joan LaRue.
In 2007, David was the featured soloist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in Torelli’s Sonata for Trumpet and Strings and performed Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 with the La Jolla Music Festival. In December 2007, he makes a return appearance on two subscription concert series of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. The Saint Louis Symphony has invited David to perform Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in January 2008; in March 2008, David will perform the Albinoni and Torelli concertos with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony.
David has been a featured soloist with many different orchestras including the Los Angeles, Hong Kong and California philharmonics, the San Diego and South Bay chamber orchestras, the Burbank and Glendale symphonies, the University of California Irvine and Pasadena Pops orchestras and the Bach Camerata. He has also soloed at the La Jolla and Music@Menlo festivals.
When David is not performing, his favorite pastime is boating with his wife, Joyce, and his children, Timothy, Samantha, Nicholas and Julia.
