Karina Canellakis, conductor & violin
VIVALDI Violin Concerto in E-flat major, “La tempesta di mare” (“Storm”)
PĒTERIS VASKS Lonely Angel
JOHN ADAMS Shaker Loops
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major
Remember the exhilaration from the first paycheck you earned for doing something you love?
At 19, Franz Schubert had composed an astonishingly large output of music but received no fees. Right before starting on his Fifth Symphony, he wrote in his diary, “Today, I composed for money for the first time.” That may, in fact, be the reason for this Symphony’s sunny disposition!
Fast gaining recognition as one of America’s most promising conductors, Karina Canellakis gives us all something to smile about. She leads Vivaldi’s buoyant “Storm” from the violin—it’s the fifth Concerto from a set of 12 that includes the famous Four Seasons—and brings her trademark grace, versatility and intense conducting style to the Schubert, Pēteris Vasks’s short meditative Lonely Angel and John Adams’ Shaker Loops.
