introducing jeff

In the second installment of intern introductions, we welcome Jeff Goodman, this summer’s development intern, to LACO. Get to know Jeff, in his own words.

Why in the world am I, an aspiring sports journalist, working in the office of a chamber orchestra this summer? Well, references to the current state of the economy aside – at this rate, I should be thankful for any paid position – I had some doubts, at least initially, about applying for this internship. After all, musical expertise and significant experience at a non-profit were not exactly highlights of my resume. However, the plights of the print media industry encouraged me to seek alternative outlets for my interest in writing, and I will have the opportunity to take pen to paper (well, finger to keyboard) as I work on LACO’s end-of-summer newsletter in the coming weeks. As the development intern, I will also be working on thank-you mailings, advocacy letters and grant proposals, all while gaining a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of the Orchestra.

Now for the fun stuff about me:

  • Was once in People Magazine as part of a feature about high school prom
  • Got his name in the credits for one “Rugrats” episode on Nickelodeon
  • Set foot in four countries in one day while studying abroad in London
  • Has never been to Hawaii (and hopes that will change)
  • Loves Ben & Jerry’s “AmeriCone Dream” ice cream, partly because of its connection to Stephen Colbert
  • Lists The Prestige as one of his favorite movies and Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle as one of his favorite books
  • Recommends listening to the work of contemporary composer Ludovico Einaudi
  • Was introduced to music by his paternal grandmother, who used to be a conductor and an elementary school music teacher
  • Spends much of his time in Berkeley at the sports desk of the Daily Californian student newspaper, where he has worked for four semesters and counting
  • Played basketball in high school and wishes he could do it for a living
