As we plan our Meet the Music youth concerts for 2012-13, I’d like to take a brief look back at our recently concluded 2011-12 series.
Over the course of the past season we’ve had the pleasure of presenting three unique Meet the Music concert programs, each of which was performed twice to full and enthusiastic LAUSD and PUSD 4th through 6th graders. We were able to create and share lesson plans and support materials with the teachers and we were able to send expert volunteer docents into the classrooms to help prepare the attendees.
The success of this and other Meet the Music seasons has hinged on the extraordinary teamwork involved in this enterprise – the skilled and dedicated staff and volunteers, the gifted and hardworking teachers, the enthusiastic and curious students and most of all our exceptional LACO musicians, guest artists and music director, Jeffrey Kahane.
The programming that we were able to present this past season ranged from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries including brand new works performed by the composers. We enjoyed the soaring lines of a romantic cello concerto and the rousing beatboxing of PROJECT Trio. Our lesson plans encompassed diverse thematic concepts including the inspiration of place, the inspiration of those who have gone before us, and the inspiration of teamwork.
At the end of each concert, we opened the floor to our Meet the Music audiences for questions and answers. We had many wonderful comments and queries that arose from these exchanges. One of my favorites Q & A moments came when a young girl approached the microphone shyly and then stated with great composure that she didn’t have a question but instead wanted the performers to know that this was her first ever classical music concert and that she was so happy to be there and “just really loved it”. Hearing this, we couldn’t be happier. Have a wonderful summer.
