Even Bach needed a job! Constituting perhaps the greatest resume of all time, his much-loved Brandenburg Concertos, a series of six impossibly challenging concertos which completely redefined chamber orchestral music, were intended as an employment pitch to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. But the Margrave remained unimpressed, Bach’s petition was ignored, and the Baroque masterpieces languished for over 200 years before their rediscovery in the dusty Brandenburg archives.
Each concerto tests the skills of multiple soloists in daring instrumental combinations. The Orchestra has previously performed the complete cycle an astonishing 51 times, making the Brandenburg Concertos a signature LACO work. On this occasion, LACO’s esteemed concertmaster Margaret Batjer leads a performance that spotlights the extraordinary finesse of LACO’s many virtuosos. Be there for an evening of exquisite artistry!
“ Batjer elaborated the line with increasing daring and imagination…In the Handel and Bach works…she set an example that any number of modern-style players—and not a few “period” ones, for that matter—would do well to follow.”
