Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra: making great music personal

westside connections 2

  • Osvaldo Golijov Tenebrae
  • Brahms String Sextet No. 2 in G major, Op. 36

Jane Hamilton’s first novel, The Book of Ruth, an Oprah’s Book Club selection, won the PEN/Hemingway Foundation Award. Her book A Map of the World was an international bestseller while her short stories have appeared in Harper’s Magazine.

Hamilton is the special guest for a program featuring two pieces in which the composers reveal their own stories. In the G major Sextet, Brahms used both rhythm and musical notation to evoke the name of Agathe von Siebold with whom he was infatuated at the time. In Tenebrae, Golijov “wanted to write a piece that could be listened to from different perspectives. That is, if one chooses to listen to it ‘from afar,’ the music would probably offer a ‘beautiful’ surface but, from a metaphorically closer distance, one could hear that, beneath that surface, the music is full of pain.”
