- Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence
Thrill to the sound of Peter Serkin in his only Los Angeles appearance this season. He performs two works that are a testament to Bach’s own mastery at the keyboard. The D-minor concerto, Bach’s transcription of an earlier violin work reminiscent of his famous Italian concerto, shows how completely he had absorbed Vivaldi into his own compositional style. In another wonderful fusion, Tchaikovsky blends the intimate tradition of German chamber music with his own grand Russian inspiration. Margaret Batjer, known for “artistic polish” and as a “marvel of genuine grace” ( Seattle Times ) plays the violin solos in the delightful Brandenburg concerto and leads the orchestra from the first chair.
