91.5 KUSC to Broadcast 40th Anniversary Season of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Performances

October 14, 2009

Recorded Live at Royce Hall and Other Los Angeles Venues

(Los Angeles, CA) – Commencing this fall, Classical KUSC 91.5 FM broadcasts ten performances of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s 40th season, recorded live last year at various Los Angeles-area venues, including Royce Hall, UCLA. Hosted and produced by Alan Chapman, the popular broadcast concerts are paired with commentary by music director Jeffrey Kahane and other LACO musicians and guest artists. The first installment airs on Sunday, October 18th at 4 pm, followed by a new broadcast every Sunday through December 20. In its third year running, the successful partnership with KUSC and LACO also extends to American Public Media’s SymphonyCast, which plans a broadcast of the Yo-Yo Ma Plays Golijov program for national distribution.

“LACO’s 40th season was an important milestone for the Orchestra and presented us with the opportunity to honor the organization’s roots and recognize an incredible 40-year journey, witnessed through the music and artists that have defined it,” commented Andrea Laguni, LACO’s executive director. “These broadcasts offer Los Angeles and national music lovers the chance to be a part of our history and hear these extraordinary concerts.”

KUSC program director Gail Eichenthal said, “Our treasured partnership with our great friends at LACO goes back to 1980. We are thrilled to be able to present another entire season of great performances by one of America’s most dazzling chamber orchestras.”

The broadcasts begin on Sunday, October 18th at 4 pm (PT) with LACO’s 40th season opening Gala. The evening honors the Orchestra’s first music director, Sir Neville Marriner, as the special guest conductor, with present music director, Jeffrey Kahane, on piano and the Orchestra performing Schumann’s Overture, Scherzo, Childhood Dreams and Finale, Op. 52; Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major; Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and Kodály’s Dances of Galánta.

Highlights of the series include the complete Brandenburg Concertos performed by LACO soloists, a long-time tradition for the Orchestra, and guest performances by Yo-Yo Ma, Cho-Liang Lin and Makoto Nakura, among others. The Orchestra also welcomes new artists, including pianists playing with LACO for the first time, Ingrid Fliter, David Fung and Jonathan Biss. LACO performs four world premieres, two United States premieres and the west coast premiere of Golijov’s Azul.

Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra broadcasts on Classical KUSC 91.5 FM are supported, in part, by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and by James & Ann Mulally. The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra also thanks Edith H. L. & J. Thomas Van Huss, June & Simon Li, and Nahum & Alice Lainer for underwriting national airplay of Yo-Yo Ma Plays Golijov on SymphonyCast.
