about Berlin, Germany

Each of the German national governments since the late 19th century has been based in Berlin—the 1871 German Empire, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, East Germany, and now the reunified Germany. It has the appearance of being a very high-tech city while retaining many magnificent historic edifices.

Konzerthaus Berlin
The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra will perform at the Konzerthaus Berlin during the 2008 European Tour. The former Schauspielhaus, built by Karl Friedrich between 1818 and 1821, is located on the historic Gendarmenmarkt and noted as a masterpiece of classicism in German architecture. After the theater was destroyed during World War II, the building was reopened as a concert house in October, 1984. Nowadays, over 550 events take place in the four halls every year. This is where Weber successfully premiered his opera Der Freischütz (_The Marksman_), where Paganini and Liszt received frenzied applause, Wagner conducted his Fliegender Holländer (_The Flying Dutchman_) and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 had its Berlin premiere.
