Introduction & Exploration
BACH Cantata No. 140 “Sleepers Awake,” BWV 140
“For a period of several years, Bach produced nearly one cantata every week…the 200 or so surviving sacred cantatas contain some of his greatest music, forged with a consistency of invention and inspiration that comes as close to perfection as it’s possible to achieve. They lie at the heart of his output, capturing an astonishing range of expression and musical styles.”
Jeffrey Kahane, “an impeccable technician… a conjurer of moods, a teller of stories,” discusses the social history of Bach’s times, providing an in-depth examination of the creation and significance behind this substantive body of work. The Orchestra and choirs perform excerpts from the featured cantata and others as illustration. After intermission, you’ll hear “Sleepers Awake” performed in full.
