The eclectic program, featuring site-specific visual concepts staged by art collective Four Larks, is a provocative blend of past and present.
The evening begins with Sky Macklay’s adrenaline-infused Many Many Cadences. Nina C. Young’s Memento Mori offers a meditation on life and the perception of time, with musical material drawn from The Art of the Fugue. The music of Haydn provides the inspiration for Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte. The evening concludes with Andrew Norman’s string trio The Companion Guide to Rome, which is expanded to 12 strings.
The event includes an “interval” with the artists, and ticketholders receive a brew ticket. A food truck will be on site.
As the curator of LACO’s first SESSION, Andrew offers compelling insights into his creative vision unhindered by the barriers of ‘traditional’ norms and venues. SESSION is designed to appeal to those culturally curious souls who may be unfamiliar with classical music as well as concertgoers intrigued by the ways in which the genre can defy expectations.”
— Executive Director Scott Harrison
Four Larks is a Downtown LA-based creative collective led by Director Mat Sweeney & Designer Sebastian Peters-Lazaro. They are best known for their Ovation Award winning ‘junkyard operas,’ which combine wildly original music, choreography and site-specific design, staged in unexpected locations. Their work bridges new music, avant-pop, dance, and immersive theatre, to create radical performance experiences. Mat & Sebastian are thrilled to collaborate with LACO and work alongside Andrew Norman to create a visual dimension for this extraordinary program. Join them for their next full production this November at the Getty Villa, and follow them at fourlarks.com.
SESSION is generously sponsored by Ruth Eliel & Bill Cooney and Howard & Judith Jelinek and also supported by H. Allen Evans & Anna Rosicka.
SESSION is presented as part of MusicLAb, LACO’s platform for dynamic composers who push boundaries.
