Good news, music lovers! A study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health — definitely my favorite epidemiological periodical — reports that “the more often people engaged in cultural activities the greater their health benefits.” (Keep in mind that this study was done on Norwegian people, and Scandinavian countries have an amazing commitment to the arts, funded by the government—Finland alone has over 30 professional orchestras, and approximately 20% of the population attend orchestra concerts regularly!)

my first silent film
May 23, 2011

On Sunday night, I attended my first Silent Film. No, I don’t mean to say that I’ve never seen a film without sound before, because I have (although not many). What I mean is that before last night, I’ve never been to LACO’s annual Silent Film event. Can you believe it? I’ve been going to LACO concerts for, I don’t know, about 4 or 5 years now, and I’ve been their LACO Newbie blogger for 3 seasons, but in regards to their annual Silent Film benefit, I’m a newbie in every sense of the word. I’ve wanted to go, but have had the bad luck in recent years of being out of town on the big night. This year, I was in town, and I’m so glad I went. Let me share the reasons why.

now i know what an aquaphone is!
May 15, 2011

Last night, I saw and heard a musical instrument I’ve never seen or heard before – an aquaphone (they’re also sometimes called waterphones). Do you know what an aguaphone is? I have a hunch that most of the people in attendance at LACO’s season-ending concert at the Alex Theatre on Saturday night were, like me, aquaphone virgins. But not anymore. Derek Bermel’s Mar de Setembro, which LACO premiered during their Mozart’s Prague concert, made good use of the aquaphone, and they introduced it to the audience in a wonderfully theatrical way. I’m a big-time theater lover, so I loved it, and it even had me wishing for more. Let me tell you all about it.

ever hear the aqua phone?

You will this weekend if you attend Mozart’s Prague!

LACO presents the world premiere of Mar de Setembro (“September Sea”) by composer-in-residence Derek Bermel this Saturday, May 14 at 8 pm at the Alex Theatre in Glendale and on Sunday, May 15 at 7 pm at UCLA’s Royce Hall. The LACO Sound Investment commissioned piece features soprano and renowned bossa nova performer Luciana Souza and is set to selected works by Portuguese poet Eugénio de Andrade.

whimsical winds questions, continued!
May 10, 2011

Whimsical Winds on May 1 was the final family concert of the season. While every concert ends with a fun and educational Q & A session with the musicians, some audience members didn’t get to voice their questions. We answered some of these questions in an earlier post on the kids eye view blog, but other questions were asked to specific LACO musicians. We have now heard back from them and are happy to share their insights here!

Prague is a beautiful city with a rich cultural history. Prague became an imperial capital in the fourteenth century, when Charles IV reigned as Holy Roman Emperor. Charles ordered the building of the Charles Bridge—called the “Stone Bridge” in his day—which is still in use today as a pedestrian walkway. Charles also founded Charles University and ordered construction to begin on the St. Vitus Cathedral, a brilliant example of Gothic architecture. In the sixteenth century, another Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II, lived in Prague, and the city attracted the greatest artists and thinkers of the time.

questions from whimsical winds
May 03, 2011

At our final family concert of the season, Whimsical Winds, some of our audience members had questions that they didn’t get to ask in the Q & A portion of the concert. We asked them to write down their questions so that we can answer them right here on the LACO blog.
