director of marketing
Nicolette Atkins has been an arts administrator for most of her career, first in her native South Africa and more recently in Los Angeles. After graduating from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, Nicolette joined South African Airways as an international flight attendant, taking full advantage of the opportunity to attend dance, theatre and classical concerts world-wide.
In 1981, she was appointed the events coordinator for the State Theatre Pretoria, South Africa and went on to head the Marketing Department of the Natal Performing Arts Council (NAPAC) in Durban, South Africa. At NAPAC she was involved in the renovation of a movie complex that had been a popular meeting place for World War II Allied troops passing through the port city on their way to North Africa. Nicolette was responsible for the public relations build-up and launch of the five-venue performing arts complex, the “new” Playhouse, as well as marketing NAPAC’s orchestra and dance, theatre and opera companies.
She worked for the LA Opera from 1987 to 2000, eventually becoming the associate director of marketing. At the Opera, she was part of the team that established the company as the one of the premier arts institutions of the United States. Nicolette then managed a travel agency specializing in opera tours to festivals and music capitals in the United States and Europe before joining the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as director of marketing in 2002.
Nicolette was introduced to the arts through classical ballet. She trained as a dancer in South Africa and continues to teach part-time at the Los Angeles Ballet Academy. She lives in Eagle Rock with her husband, opera singer John Atkins. Following a family tradition, each of their three beautiful cats are named for a favorite place visited: Rovaniemi and Kittila, ginger bullseye tabbies, for villages in Lapland, and calico Maui for the Hawaiian island.
