About Yeko Ladzekpo-Cole

Yeko Ladzekpo-Cole was born into a family of drummers, dancers and composers from the country of Ghana, West Africa. Her parents helped establish the West African Drum and Dance program at California Institute of the Arts and UCLA. Yeko has worked with Derrick as a composer/dancer co-creating team notably, Derrick Spiva’s “The Body Overcome”, which premiered as part of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s SESSION series.

About James Waterman

James Waterman is a multifaceted percussionist, composer, songwriter, and teaching artist based in Los Angeles. James is devoted to the exploration of all areas of percussion and has extensively studied Western Classical solo repertoire, orchestral percussion, Arabic drumming, Trinidadian Steel Drums, jazz vibraphone, Cuban and Haitian folkloric percussion, drum set, Indian tabla and tala systems, and Brazilian percussion. James worked with Derrick on the percussion parts for “Mother of Bravery” and “Mind the Rhythm”.

James will help illustrate how he helped Derrick to realize his rhythmic idea into a part that can be played by classically trained percussionist
