In addition to being a member of trombone faculty of the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach since 2005, he was also the Instructor of Trombone and Euphonium at California State University, Fresno from 2003-2010.

A native of Fairfield, California, Steve is active as a free-lance bass trombonist throughout the state of California and performs with such orchestras as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony, the Long Beach Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, Opera, and Ballet Orchestras, the Santa Rosa Symphony, and numerous others. He was a member of the New York City Opera National Company from 1998-2001. Steve has performed in Italy with the Orchestra Del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the batons of Zubin Mehta, Ricardo Muti, and Semyon Bychkov. He toured and recorded with John Tesh, and has recorded for the motion picture, television, and video game industries. Recent projects include the films Captain Phillips, Pacific Rim, and Godzilla, the television series Agents of Shield, and the debut album of the Laura Dickinson Big Band.

An advocate of new music, Steve commissioned Pompato, a new work for bass trombone and piano by Kenneth Froelich, Professor of Composition at CSU Fresno. He received his BA from CSU, Long Beach and his MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His principal teachers were Jeff Reynolds and John Engelkes, and he has also studied with Ralph Sauer, Mark Lawrence, Joe Alessi, Steve Witser, Roy Main, Dan Livesay, Charlie Vernon, Steve Norrell, Don Harwood, Dave Ridge, Gerry Pagano, Terry Cravens, Bob Sanders, and Alan Baer.
