MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60
Tune stuck in your head?
It happened to Mendelssohn. In 1838, the composer wrote virtuoso Ferdinand David that he would like to compose a concerto for him, “the beginning of which will not leave me in peace.” And so, Mendelssohn’s last large orchestral work—and one of the most popular violin concertos of all time—came to fruition!
“Consistently illuminating” Peter Oundjian, music director of the Toronto Symphony and Royal Scottish National orchestras, opens the program with Bartók and closes it with Beethoven’s sunny Fourth Symphony.
