Set in out of the ordinary locales, SESSION is a unique experience where LACO musicians join forces with compelling composers. Each program is designed to fit the unique properties of a space and test ideas about the relationship between performers and audience.
“These composers and their music serve as bridges between musical traditions, emphasizing the connections between things that may initially appear to be dissimilar,” says Derrick, who served as our Composer In Residence in the 2015-16 season and is noted for conducting, composing and teaching styles that reflect the multicultural atmosphere of Los Angeles, where he lives and works.
SESSION continues in Winter 2019 with conductor/composer Matthias Pintscher and in spring 2019 with conductor/composer and wild Up director Christopher Rountree, whose work stands at the intersection of classical music, new music, performance art and pop.
“SESSION is designed to appeal to those culturally curious souls who may be unfamiliar with classical music as well as concertgoers intrigued by the ways in which the genre can defy expectations.”
— LACO Executive Director Scott Harrison
Four Larks
Four Larks is a Downtown LA-based creative collective led by Director Mat Sweeney & Designer Sebastian Peters-Lazaro. They are best known for their Ovation Award winning ‘junkyard operas,’ which combine wildly original music, choreography and site-specific design, staged in unexpected locations. Their work bridges new music, avant-pop, dance, and immersive theatre, to create radical performance experiences. Mat & Sebastian are thrilled to collaborate with LACO and work alongside Andrew Norman to create a visual dimension for this extraordinary program. Join them for their next full production this November at the Getty Villa, and follow them at fourlarks.com.
