Wade Culbreath was appointed principal timpanist-percussionist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 2009. As a soloist with the orchestra, he performed the Sejourne “Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra,” and was praised for his “dazzling technique” (American Record Guide) and “virtuosity and jazzy flair.” (Los Angeles Times)
A much sought-after musician in Los Angeles, Wade holds the position of principal percussion with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and principal timpani with the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra. He has free-lanced as timpanist and percussionist with the Los Angeles Opera, Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theater, National Ballet of Canada and the San Francisco Symphony. With the Los Angeles Philharmonic, he participated in two European tours, eight recordings on the Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammaphon labels and the PBS Great Performances broadcast celebrating the music of John Williams.
His work includes the world-premiere Steve Reich recordings, “You Are (Variations)” and “Daniel Variations” on the Nonesuch label. As a session musician, he has played on hundreds of soundtrack recordings for the film studios including the Academy Award winning scores, “Aladdin,” “La La Land” and “Life of Pi.”
